democracy in action

Reflect: The processes used to make laws, govern society, and maintain democracy are complex and multi-faceted. The processes involve many different political issues and actors, including interest groups and political parties. In this discussion, you will examine the politics surrounding a recall election. This will give great insights into how this democratic process works, enabling critical analysis of the various political actors involved, and how their behavior and power relationships impacts recalls.

Write: For your initial post of at least 200 words, research a recall election. Use this website from the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) as your starting point for your research: Recall of State Officials (Links to an external site.).

You will be assigned one of the three following gubernatorial recall elections in U.S. history to research (NCSL, 2013, Para. 8):

  • 2012 Governor Scott Walker recall attempt in Wisconsin
  • 2003 Governor Gray Davis recall in California
  • 921 Governor Lynn J. Frazier recall in North Dakota

Research a specific governor based on the first letter of your last name:

  • If your last name begins with A through H, you must research Governor Scott Walker, Wisconsin (2012).
  • If your last name begins with I through P, you must research Governor Gray Davis, California (2003).
  • If your last name begins with Q through Z, you must research Governor Lynn J. Davis, North Dakota (1921).

In your discussion post, answer the following questions:

  • What interests groups, to include political parties, were involved in the success or failure of this recall election and why? What was the result of the recall election?
  • Were there any unintended consequences of this recall election?
  • Do you believe recall elections are good or bad for democracies and why?
