Q1 Process engineering primarily focuses on the design, operation and on-site maintenance of chemical and various material manufacturing processes. Similar to other disciplines, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has attained a certain maturity in order to analyze and optimize these processes. Besides convective, turbulent and diffusive transport of mass, momentum and energy, CFD in process engineering has to account for several other complexities such as multi-phase fluids including phase changes, the kinetics of chemical and biological conversion, unknown material and thermodynamic properties, among others. In this context:
(i) Give a brief note on the role of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in general and its application specific to process engineering systems.
(ii) Brief the major types of classical CFD techniques as well as new developments in solving complex process engineering problems.
(iii) Critically analyse the applicability, benefits and general use of CFD tools in process industry.
